The one simple thing you can do right now to feel better

The best news…its something that you’ve done every moment of every day since the moment you were born. The only difference is that now you’ll be paying attention to it. Yes that’s right, we’re taking about the wonder that is Breath work.

Inspired by BreathPod's Instagram live session this morning, I wanted to share with you some of the amazing health and wellness benefits that can be gained from simply paying attention to the way you’re breathing. I’ve done a little research and it is widely recognised that breath work can help;

  • Lower stress levels

  • Improve mood

  • Lower blood pressure

  • Improve lymphatic flow

  • Improve digestion

  • Increased mind / body connection

  • In some cases even emotional release from trauma

Wow, all that just from paying attention to the way we breathe?! Yes please! So where to start?

The practice

I like to start my day with some breath work, as it sets me up for a positive day ahead, but really you can do it whenever benefits you most. When you wake up in the morning, place both feet on the floor and take a long, deep breath in through your nose. Breathe so deeply that you feel your tummy expand and your chest rise. Hold for a moment and then take a long breath out, through either your nose or mouth. You might feel some tingling sensations as the oxygenated air starts filling those deeper parts of your lungs. Do this as many times as feels comfortable and really try to be present in the moment.

What next…

Once you feel comfortable, perhaps try incorporating some affirmations. For example, you could say in your head as you’re breathing in ‘I am calm / present / balanced (insert word here for how you would like to feel that day). You can follow this thought for both the in and out breath if you’d like. Alternatively you could focus on a ‘releasing’ thought for the out breath. Think of what you’d like to let go of for that day eg. I release self doubt. This can be a really powerful tool to focus your mind towards the positive for the day ahead.

Let me know how you get on and remember, be kind to yourself,

Love, Lois x
